Professor Bernie Bissett is an ICU physiotherapist with more than 20 years’ experience, and is currently the Joint Professor of Allied Health Research in Canberra. She has worked in Sydney, London and Canberra, and completed a PhD on the effect of inspiratory muscle training on recovery from mechanical ventilation in ICU patients. Bernie and her team have published randomised trials, feasibility studies and clinical practice guidelines about inspiratory muscle training in ICU patients, and she is currently co-leading a multicentre study in 23 ICUs around Australia and New Zealand. Bernie has recently been keynote speaker at conferences in Spain, Kuwait and New Zealand, and delivers workshops and practical training and advice to clinicians around the world. When not excitedly talking about optimising ICU recovery, you will find Bernie walking her 2 cheeky Cavoodles in the Canberra sunshine, or lifting heavy things in time to music at the gym.
