About us
Kaya! Welcome to West Australian Ventilation and Early rehabilitation (WAVE) Association, a local, not-for-profit organisation committed to the betterment of healthcare education in the beautiful state of WA.
Mission:
To empower all clinicians, regardless of location, as leaders in delivering care to those receiving ventilation therapy.
Objectives:
The objective of WAVE is to provide innovative education programs and knowledge-sharing opportunities for clinicians engaged in delivering and managing ventilation therapy. From the ICU to the ward, rehabilitation centres through to the community, we aim to cover the full continuum of care.

WAVE Conference 2025
Invitation
Weaning patients from both invasive and non-invasive ventilation presents significant challenges to both clinicians and patients, with high variability in definitions and criteria for weaning success and failure. There is no universally accepted standard for weaning, leading to differing practices across both clinical and geographical settings. Factors such as patient-specific conditions, the underlying mechanism that necessitates ventilation, and the duration of ventilation, further complicate the process. Additionally, identifying the optimal timing and method for weaning, including the use of spontaneous breathing trials or gradual pressure reduction, remains contentious, adding to the complexity and variability of successful weaning outcomes.
Our exciting two-day conference themed The Breathing Breakthrough: from ventilation to liberation, brings to you international and national leaders in the field to explore these challenges and more. The conference promises to be an impactful event, featuring science-based plenary sessions, interactive break-out presentations, pre-conference workshops, poster presentations, an exhibitor’s hall showcasing the latest advancements in healthcare technology, and invaluable insights from individuals who have experienced ventilation therapy firsthand. This conference will not only advance clinical knowledge but also foster a community dedicated to improving patient outcomes through shared learning and innovation.
Conference Aims
- Enhance clinician awareness and understanding of the classification systems for weaning from mechanical ventilation
- Enhance clinician knowledge and understanding of the multi-system physiological interactions that underlie weaning success and failure
- Enhance clinician awareness and understanding of the evidence and methodologies for early prediction of prolonged weaning and/or failure to wean
- Enhance clinical understanding in objective assessment and indices to predict weaning success
- Enhance clinical awareness of the numerous strategies for weaning from ventilation
- Explore the clinical management and pathway for patients with ongoing ventilation requirements (both invasive and non-invasive)
- Explore adjunct therapies that support the process of ventilation weaning
- Introduce clinicians to the future of ventilation, including remote monitoring, artificial intelligence, and deep system learning
Target Audience
- Critical Care Intensivists and Trainees
- Respiratory Physicians and Trainees
- Critical Care and Respiratory Nurses / Nurse Practitioners
- Clinicians from related specialties (including Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, and Neurorehabilitation)
- Allied health professionals working in these specialties (including Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Pathologists, and Dieticians)
